Montserrat monastery (cat. Monestir Santa Maria de Montserrat, Spanish Monasterio de Montserrat) is a Benedictine monastery, the spiritual symbol and religious center of Catalonia and a center of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over the world. The monastery, situated at a height of 725 m above sea level, received its name from a mountainous area of Montserrat ("the Cut mountain"), 50 km North-West of Barcelona, where in a small space 10 x 5 km, thousands of towering limestone cliffs. Human imagination gave separate rocks equally interesting names: the Mummy, the Belly of the Bishop, the elephant's Trunk, Horse Bernard. In 1987, the natural complex, adjacent to the monastery, declared a national Park of Catalonia. The rich flora of this corner of nature covers more than one thousand species. Decorated with sculptures and majolica and well maintained mountain trails of the Museum under the open sky, enveloped the surroundings of the monastery, equipped with pointers to the duration and level of difficulty of the route and are popular for walking among tourists and local residents. The monastery has a developed tourist infrastructure. The Montserrat monastery is laid gondola. Since 2003, operates the rack railway "Cremallera de Montserrat". The first mention of the monastery of Montserrat dates back to the year 880. In the IX century, it was used four of the skit, one of which was dedicated to the virgin Mary. During his second voyage Christopher Columbus was named after the monastery of Montserrat island in the archipelago of the lesser Antilles, now a British colony. In 1522 pilgrimage to Montserrat was made by the founder of the Jesuits Ignatius Loyola. In 1592, was consecrated the new Cathedral, built in Renaissance style with Gothic elements. The Cathedral was distinguished by large size, especially given the fact that it was located on a rocky cliff. In 1811, the monastery was set on fire and destroyed by Napoleon's troops. From the original buildings of the monastery are preserved only the Romanesque portal of the Cathedral and the remains of a Gothic cloister. Some time a Benedictine monastery was in ruins and desolation. In 1844, with the support of the Benedictine community and the Catalan population began a restoration of the monastery, which took about a hundred years. In the twentieth century Montserrat became the most tangible symbol of Catalonia and the support in a difficult time in its history. Only in the walls of the Cathedral of Montserrat during the Franco dictatorship was conducted by service and marriage, then banned the Catalan language. In mid-October, we made an interesting journey to Catalonia (Spain). The main purpose of our trip was the island of Minorca (Menorca), where we car toured the entire island.
