Recently, when I visited him when his illness was weighing heavily on him, and he was in great weakness, I was very impressed by the extent of his dedication to his students and his yeshiva, when he told me with great emotion that despite his illness he was privileged to deliver his lessons when it was agreed with him, and his only hope was that he would be able to return to prayers and seders in the hall of his lofty yeshiva. In Tractate Avot (Chapter 3, Mishnah 9) We have learned that Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa says, “Whoever fears his sin before his wisdom, his wisdom is fulfilled, and whoever believes his wisdom before fears his sin, his wisdom is not fulfilled.” He would say, “Whoever’s actions exceed his wisdom, his wisdom is fulfilled, and whoever’s wisdom exceeds his actions, his wisdom is not fulfilled.” The great Rabbi Baruch, zt”l, lived his life out of fear of sin, in the strictness of the law, with a serious regard for the observance of the Halacha in all its details and strictness, and his actions exceeded his wisdom, and indeed he was worthy and his wisdom was fulfilled, and his wisdom continues and is fulfilled among his many disciples. We all have lost a great loss, the children of Torah, a great loss to his exalted assembly, and to all his thousands of disciples, and a great loss to his exalted family. May God send his condolences to the widowed rabbinate, who will live, and to all his glorious family, and to all his many disciples. And may his sons and sons-in-law, the brilliant rabbis, may he continue in his path and great spirit, as was his pure desire.
