This is the longplay of Phantasy Star, an RPG game released for the Sega Master System, produced and distributed by SEGA and released in 1987 in Japan, 1988 in the United States and Europe and in 1991 in Brazil (distributed by Tectoy). The story of the game takes place in the 342nd century, in a universe composed of the Algol solar system, ruled by a benevolent lord named King Lassic. One day, the king becomes cruel and tyrannical, monsters begin to emerge and chaos begins to settle across the universe. Lassic is suspected to have made some evil pact for immortality. Faced with the difficulties imposed by Lassic's tyranny, Nero's group appears, which rebelled against the government. This group is now hunted by Robotcops, soldiers loyal to the government, who also started to act as fighting machines against Nero's resistance movement. Nero ends up being seriously injured by the Robotcops. Nero's sister, a young girl named Alis, witnesses her brother's death at the hands of these soldiers. With her dying breath, the rebel asks her to seek out a man named Odin, a hero who can help her overthrow the king. Alis then decides to avenge Nero's death and will spare no effort to overthrow Lassic and save the universe. The game stars Alis, a warrior girl who uses swords, shields and magic and has fairly balanced status. On her journey, Alis will have three more allies, who will be very important throughout the story: Odin: a strong warrior who was turned into stone and needs to be cured with an antidote (called Alsulin) and uses attacks with axes and shoots with laser pistols; Myau: a magical cat, who in addition to carrying a vial with the antidote Alsulin, fights with physical attacks and healing spells, in addition to being able to disable traps and Noah: a sorcerer, who uses attack spells on his opponents and spells of protection on allies, in addition to opening magically sealed doors. Phantasy Star is a turn-based battle game, like many RPGs from that era. Both combats and dialogues with NPCs are in first person, as if that character were in front of the player and the scenery in the background is also included. Due to limitations of the Master System's hardware, only one monster appears on the screen in each battle, but by the amount of life bars on the upper right side of the screen we know how many enemies we are facing and all enemies have animations. The labyrinths are another part that differentiates this game from others of its kind at the time, as they are generated in 3D. The game used a capacity of 4 Megabits (approximately 512 Kilobytes), which may seem small at the time I write this description, but which was an impressive number for the time. There are 3 planets in the game: Palma, which has abundant water, grass, and is the closest to what we can call “Planet Earth”; Motavia, the desert planet and little colonized; and Dezoris, which is a glacial territory full of labyrinths. And to visit these planets we need to use a rocket, called Luveno (which is also the name of the scientist who built it), as well as vehicles to help in inhospitable terrain. Phantasy Star is a turn-based battle game, like many RPGs from that era. The game has a relatively high difficulty, because unfortunately we don't have items to restore magic - which can only be restored in hospitals - or revive characters - which can only be done in churches, fortunately in later games these flaws have been corrected - and the labyrinths does not have a map (something that was included in the remakes of this game, making life easier for players). Resources need to be well managed and it is necessary to collect money (mesetas), in addition to evolving the characters and being prepared for the labyrinths. The game's plot mixes fantasy and science fiction, taking inspiration from D&D and Star Wars. The development of Phantasy Star had two key people: designer Rieko Kodama and programmer Yuji Naka, both important names for Phantasy Star to become a reality. This was the first game in the Phantasy Star series, which would soon gain new games on the Sega Genesis and other platforms.
