This is the 22nd episode of the London Transport series. Today, we will travel on the London Transport Museum 1938 Stock Heritage Journey to Cockfosters. 這是倫敦交通系列的第22集。今天,我們將搭乘倫敦交通博物館1938 stock復古列車之旅前往卡克福斯特斯。 In the 1930s increasing demand and ambitious expansion plans meant that the Underground needed new trains. The 1938 stock was the result of years of trials and in-house research and development. Behind its smooth, rounded exterior were many innovations, including under-floor driving equipment. Over 1,000 cars were built, running first on the Northern line, and later the Bakerloo, Piccadilly and other lines. After nearly 50 years, the last train was withdrawn in 1988. He believed engineering to be ‘an art just as much as is the work of a painter or an architect.’ Early experiments included full streamlining, but this fashionable 1930s feature was found to have no practical benefit and was rejected as unnecessary ornamentation. Trials with four prototypes resulted in the classic design: sleeker and smoother, inside and out, than their predecessors. The control equipment that took up a quarter of each driving motor car of earlier trains was ingeniously redistributed and located below the floor, giving more room for passenger seating. The 1938 Tube stock was intended mainly for expanded services in north London, as part of the 1935-40 New Works Programme. It traversed the line’s 36-mile (57.9km) route for 40 years, covering nearly two million miles (3.2 million km). In 1979 it was restored to 1950s condition at Acton Works and donated to London Transport Museum (LTM). A four-car unit of 1938 Tube stock was restored to operational condition in 1999 and is preserved at the Museum Depot. It has been used for many special events and tours around the network. After serving on the Bakerloo for several years the last of the 1938 stock were overhauled once more in the mid-1980s and moved to the Northern line. They were retired in May 1988, just short of 50 years’ service.
