Join me as I clean and restore the gravestone of Specialist John Edward Cashley, and tell his remarkable story. He is a Vietnam War hero whose compassion, sacrifice, and kindness defined his short but extraordinary life. This episode traces his journey from North Philadelphia to the streets of Saigon during the Tet Offensive. Born in Philadelphia in 1947, John Cashley grew up in a hardworking family and left school early to support his parents and siblings. When drafted at age 19, he could have claimed a family hardship deferment but chose to serve his country instead. During basic training at Fort Bragg, he became known as “the GI Santa,” organizing a toy donation program for disadvantaged children. When deployed to Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, he continued sending candy, clothing, and money to local children and even sponsored an orphan; all while sending most of his military pay home to help his parents pay their mortgage. On May 13, 1968, during the fierce fighting near the Y Bridge in Saigon, Specialist Cashley was killed in action at just 20 years old. His unit, the Bunny Platoon, suffered heavy losses that day. Despite the chaos of war, newspapers reported that he continued spreading kindness to Vietnamese children until the very end.
