Report by Serambi Indonesia Journalist Rahmad Wiguna | Aceh Tamiang SERAMBINEWS.COM, KUALASIMPANG - The Ministry of Forestry inspected the soft-shell crab cultivation managed by the Bungong Tanjung Forest Farmers Group (KTH) in Aceh Tamiang Regency on Wednesday (June 17, 2026). This visit is part of the government's efforts to strengthen the development of community businesses that have grown from social forestry programs in coastal areas. The delegation was led by the Director of Social Forestry Business Development at the Ministry of Forestry, Apri Dwi Sumara. Also present were the Director of Fund Distribution at the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH), Damayanti Ratunanda, the Director of the Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL), Teuku Isa, and the Head of the Medan Social Forestry Agency, Arief Budi Setiawan. The Head of the Bungong Tanjung KTH, Irma Suryani, explained during the meeting that this cultivation has generated a daily turnover of IDR 2 million. This turnover has significantly boosted the economy of the 15 members, all of whom are women. According to Irma, soft-shell crab cultivation is a new concept for her group. Initially, they were involved in mangrove rehabilitation activities in coastal areas. The soft-shell crab cultivation program was awarded by Forest Management Unit (KPH) VII for its second-best mangrove rehabilitation program. The group's success in planting mangroves subsequently garnered the attention of the KPH and the Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL). From there, the group received assistance to build fish cages for community economic activities. Apri Dwi Sumara, Director of Social Forestry Business Development at the Ministry of Forestry, assessed that the cultivation group demonstrated resilience in developing its business despite the Aceh Tamiang region being hit by a disaster at the end of last year. He stated that the sustainability of the community's business is determined not only by production capacity but also by access to a wider market. Therefore, the government is encouraging soft-shell crab cultivation products to enter a more organized supply chain.
