Traditional religious structures are increasingly losing importance. Yet fundamental human needs for meaning, community, and moral guidance persist. These needs seek new forms of expression, often in fanatical ideologies. In most industrialized countries, religiosity is declining. This is also the case in Switzerland. More and more people are leaving the church. For the first time, there are more people without religious affiliation in this country than Catholics, who previously constituted the largest group. And yet, faith somehow seems to survive – even if only in fragments. This is the analysis by dramaturge and essayist Bernd Stegemann. For him, belief in absolute truths has shifted into the world. This is why ideological exaggerations, populism, fanaticism, and fundamentalism are omnipresent in the secular world. The individual has taken God's place in the world, according to the thesis in Stegemann's latest book, "What Remains of Faith – Ways Out of the Atheistic Apocalypse."
