Thank you! 🙏 The historic town of Kamphaeng Phet lies on the banks of the Ping River and just off Highway 1 between Tak to the north and Nakhon Sawan to the south. It was primarily an outpost town during the Sukhothai period of the 13th to 15th centuries in order to defend against the Lanna Kingdom to the north and the Burmese to the west. You can still see evidence of this today as the city walls still remain - the name Kamphaeng Phet actually means ‘wall as hard as diamonds’. However, legend has it that there was not 1 but 2 ancient cities here before the Sukhothai period. The settlements of Chakangrao to the east of the Ping River and Nakhon Chum to the west, both date back to the Dvaravati culture which was an ancient Mon kingdom that existed between the 6th and 11th centuries. Kamphaeng Phet’s Historical Park is divided into two areas: The inner district, that’s surrounded by walls that measure 2,200m long by 300-700m wide, was where the old fortified city was located along with palaces and the most important temples where "town monks" studied, taught and performed ceremonies for believers. The second area to the north known as the forest district was the location for "forest monks" who went into retreat by dedicating themselves to meditation. Here you’ll find many temples immersed in amongst trees but please be aware of stray dogs in this area. Areas along the Ping River acted as strategic front-lines during the Sukhothai Kingdom. However, Kamphaeng Phet declined over the centuries after Sukhothai was invaded by the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1438.
