Words and Pictures Year 2 Ep9 (2001) - FULL EPISODE

Sophie Aldred's living up a lighthouse and is on the lookout (heh heh) for words that end with the same sound -ear, -ere, or -eer, and she and her friends come up with the likes of near, here, cheer, steer, deer, fear, gear, rear, and even pier but that last one doesn't count because it's spelled differently. Meanwhile, the story is The Smallest Whale by Elisabeth Beresford, which is read to us by none other than Brian Blessed. This Year 2 variant of Words and Pictures is really quite different from the normal studio version we're used to, but it's very good fun, if occasionally a touch gimmicky. The biggest heresy is we're now apparently in the company of Magic Pencil's hoity-toity cousin or something, who's gone all CGI and does joined-up writing and everything. It also seems that there are regular characters such as Sid the Seagull, Salty Sam and Colin the Clam, each with their own regular job. Sid reveals today's sound, Salty sings a song on a theme, and Colin... Well, in this one, he introduces the concept of suffixes, and we see which words we can add -ful to the end of and still make sense. Slightly more advanced than I'd expect for KS1, but there you go. (Oh, and the voices of Sid and Colin are provided by a certain Ashley Artus, who we know round these parts as Tristan Shout in Polterguests.) No idea what that "Don't eat kippers while you're riding up a hill" song is all about, by the way. Grateful thanks to Ben for providing this recording - please take the time to check out    / benriggers   when you get the chance.
