British artillery fired into southern Iraq, and then the troops advanced, becoming the first British regiment on Iraqi soil. The troops didn't know whether to expect chemical warfare - or to be greeted by surrendering Iraqi soldiers. The only thing they did see was oil wells set alight by the retreating forces. Though the operation started two days earlier than originally planned, British troops met little resistance on the journey north. On Friday, the guns were in action again, this time well inside Iraq.
