Written by Lee Hazlewood, recorded and released in 1965, the song would go onto be covered by Billy Ray Circus, Jessica Simpson (Dukes of Hazzard movie soundtrack), and Megadeath. Its most prominent and poignant revival came in the 1987 Vietnam war movie Full Metal Jacket, depicting U.S. Marine R&R during the intensity of the 1968 TET Offensive.
