How Arrogance Destroyed the British Motorcycle Empire

Britain once built roughly one in every four motorcycles on Earth. BSA, Triumph, and Norton didn't just lead the industry — they were the industry. Twenty years later, all of it was gone. This is the full story of how it happened: the chairman whose company money built gold-plated show cars with zebra-skin seats while his engineers begged for machine tools, the 1960 report from Japan that Britain's own greatest designer wrote and Britain's boardrooms sang to sleep, the superbike that was ready in 1965 and delayed until it had one season to live, the workers who locked themselves inside their own factory for eighteen months rather than watch it die — and the government autopsy that concluded, in a hundred and fifty pages, that nobody killed the British motorcycle empire.
