Trust Deficit Still Clouds India-Bangladesh Ties || The Gist

Five months after Bangladesh's elected government took office, relations with India remain shaped by a lingering trust deficit, according to Prothom Alo diplomatic correspondent Raheed Ejaz. Speaking to StratNews Global, Ejaz argued that many Bangladeshis feel India has yet to fully adjust to the country's new political reality following the upheaval of August 2024. At the same time, New Delhi remains uncertain about the future direction of Bangladeshi politics. He described rebuilding trust as the most important challenge facing both countries. Ejaz identified three major issues affecting bilateral ties. The first is the trust gap itself. The second is the continued presence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India, which he said remains politically sensitive in Bangladesh and should be addressed through diplomatic and legal channels. The third involves practical concerns that affect ordinary people, including visas, connectivity, trade restrictions, border management and water-sharing arrangements. He urged both governments to remove barriers that hinder travel and commerce while beginning negotiations on the Ganges Water Treaty before its expiry later this year. Ejaz also rejected suggestions that Bangladesh's engagement with Pakistan means it has forgotten the events of 1971, noting that Dhaka continues to seek a formal apology from Islamabad. He further argued that concerns about rising fundamentalism are often overstated and that Bangladesh remains committed to combating extremism. For Ejaz, the path forward is straightforward: mutual trust, mutual respect and recognition of each other's interests, beginning with easier visa access and progress on water-sharing issues.
