Social anthropologist Bernardo Matías argued that although there is a school of thought that attempts to deny the existence of racism in the Dominican Republic, the truth is that it does exist. "In the Dominican Republic, we are indeed racist," Matías stated in his "Friday Man" segment on the program "From Now On" on Acento TV. According to Matías, ideological currents promoted by politicians, intellectuals, and media figures have been developing to deny racism in the Dominican Republic. "The absence of racism is understood because: We are a society of social coexistence that does not exclude people for racial reasons. What defines us is an original construction of race and a sense of Dominican identity. We have had Black presidents," he explained. However, "The Friday Man" asserts that racism has persisted since the time of the Spanish colonization of the island, beginning in 1492. "In Dominican society, racism has existed from the very beginning of colonization to the present day. It's a Eurocentric and ethnocentric legacy. One culture is considered superior to another. It's the construction of a racist anthropology and theology," he argued. He explained that human beings are 99.9% genetically identical. "Racism is one of the lowest sentiments of human consciousness. Every human being has the right to be treated equally," he stated.
