Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern BWV 739 is one of the oldest surviving autograph manuscripts by Bach. The work is also preserved in the Möller Manuscript and the Plauener Orgelbuch, indicating that it was already highly regarded as one of Bach’s important early compositions. With its richly ornamented chorale melody and skillful counterpoint, the piece vividly expresses the joy and radiance of the Epiphany chorale and stands among the masterpieces of Bach’s early years.
