Steve Morse on “Triangulation” and the sequel to “Tumeni Notes”

Steve Morse is back. The Steve Morse Band has returned with Triangulation, their first studio album since 2009’s Out Standing In Their Field, out November 14, 2025 on Music Theories Recordings. https://lnk.to/SteveMorseBand In this conversation with Colter McCorkindale for Make Weird Music, Steve talks about writing through grief after the loss of his wife and how music became a healing project during and after COVID. He shares the story behind “Taken by an Angel,” arranged with his son Kevin for her memorial service and later finished for the album. Steve also breaks down how he wrote for his guests: John Petrucci on the title track “Triangulation,” Eric Johnson on “TexUS,” and Kevin Morse on “Taken by an Angel,” plus the long-form epic “Too Many Parts” and its connection to “Too Many Notes.” Along the way he talks about: • Composing around physical limitations and changing technique • Sorting ideas between Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band, Purple, and TV work • His “vault” of unfinished demos and sketch ideas • The old Dregs bandhouse routine with cassette tapes instead of charts • His Open Ears column, hard lessons about contracts and ownership, and why music should stay fun, stylistically wide open, and free from industry boxes If you grew up on High Tension Wires, the Dregs, Kansas, or Deep Purple, this is a deep, thoughtful hang with one of guitar’s true lifers.
