In the early 1880s, copper and silver were discovered, and mining began. A 5 stamp mill was built by the Mining Company in 1882, A small smelting furnace was erected in 1884; however, due to the stifling heat and lack of water, the mine closed in 1889. Mining did continue spasmodically over several decades. Talc was mined in the surrounding area, and during the mid-1930s, a small camp sprung up that housed miners run to the 1960s.
