Established as the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, the Silver Line opened in 2014 as the 6th route in the DC Metro system, completing its second and final phase in 2022. The route originates with the Blue Line from Largo, MD through the heart of DC, before crossing south under the Potomac River and into Rosslyn, VA, where it continues on with the Orange Line to Falls Church. There, it makes the last half of its journey along exclusive tracks inside of Virginia State Route 267, the Dulles Access Road, hitting 11 brand-new stations & terminating in Ashburn. As such, the Silver Line boasts a total of 34 stops, taking an hour and a half to travel end-to-end as the longest route in the Metro system. In 2025, WMATA introduced a Silver Line extension to New Carrollton, with every other train serving the new segment. The Metrorail service was launched in 1976 by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), with roots going back to the 1950s. Since then, it's become the second-largest transit rail transit system in America after the New York City Subway. Existing rail cars include the aluminum-skinned 2000/3000 (Breda) and 6000 Series (Alstom), as well as the stainless steel 7000 Series (Kawasaki), with the 8000 Series (Hitachi) set to enter service by 2030. The Silver Line spans 41 miles while sharing tracks and tunnels with the Blue & Orange Lines for the first half of its run, with speeds topping out around 75 miles per hour (59-65 mph in manual mode), and trains operating in 6- and 8-car sets.
