Landing on a hillside
We were working off a very steep airstrip during ag ops in New Zealand. The strip itself can be a little tricky to see, with trees all around and not being in your typical setting. I highlighted it a couple times for easy spotting :-) The strip has a 21% gradient and 280m (920ft) long. During the LANDING roll we are CLIMBING at 1000 feet per minute (Yes one thousand!). The gauge I zoomed in on is the VSI (vertical speed indicator) which is the best way of showing just how steep the strip is. This is a very effective way of stopping an aircraft in a very short space. Due to it's steepness it is a one way strip- land uphill take off downhill regardless of wind. The bonus on take off- Loaded with 2000kgs of fertiliser plus pilot and fuel, the steep strip helps speed the aircraft up quicker and not require the traditional longer lengths that you see at more conventional aerodromes. That being said, the aircraft is sometimes not completely flying and must continue it's descent until suitable flying speed is reached. Neat little strip to be working off. The aircraft is a Cresco. Footage was taken from a GoPro 3 and my phone. Thanks for watching! / jimbo.jet.burgess / jimboburgess Music: A Bouquet Of Roses by DJ Quads / aka-dj-quads
