UK/Euro Stones V1 - Pierre Du Sud Quest Here we hone up a Herder 77 Inox on my rare PDSQ. PDSQ – Pierre du Sud Quest The French Mystery Stone (sometimes called the French Thuringian) Today we’re taking a look at one of the rarest and least-understood natural razor hones to ever come out of France — the PDSQ, short for Pierre du Sud Quest. If you’ve never seen one, that’s normal. These stones are extremely uncommon, rarely show up for sale, and almost never appear with any kind of label or documented history. This is why old-school collectors simply called it the French Mystery Stone. ⸻ Appearance – The Yellow Signature A real PDSQ follows a very consistent pattern: • Yellow, cream, tan, or pale mustard in color • Very fine, dense, uniform texture • Sometimes faint swirls or mottling • Frequently found mounted in old paddle strops • And most importantly: It raises a yellow / mustard / yellow-green slurry That slurry color is one of the key identifiers of a genuine PDSQ. Because of the yellow tone and the paddle mounting, many shavers originally mistook these stones for Belgian coticules — until they shaved off them. That’s where the mystery deepened. ⸻ Edge Quality – Why Some Called It a “French Thuringian” While the stone looks like a coticule, the edge it produces is very different. Shavers quickly realized the PDSQ gives: • A soft, buttery, mellow finish • A smooth, quiet edge with no bite • A refined mirror bevel • A comfortable post-shave feel This type of edge reminded people of Thuringian / Escher edges, which is where the nickname “French Thuringian” came from. It was not a geological comparison. It was simply how the finished edge felt. But the most common and accurate nickname remains: “The French Mystery Stone.” ⸻ Performance The PDSQ is a true finishing stone: • Very hard • Very fine • Very slow cutting • Extremely consistent on steel • Produces a mellow, skin-friendly shave The feedback is muted, quiet, and glassy — just like many high-end finishing hones. This is the kind of stone a French barber would have used daily without ever mentioning what it was or where it came from. #straightrazorshoning #arkansasstones #knifesharpening #honing #strightrazorcommunity #wetshavingcommunity #honingvideo #barbershave #thecajunnblade Channels I enjoy: @Lathered_Yeti @LongIslandShaving @CapeCodWetShaving @dougiesshavin1627 @ardennes-coticule4515 @JustShaves @TheHighRockLather @mellymelshaves @TheBarbershopDuet @BarberDave @jpo31 @Martins-Shaves123 @jd_str8rzr @billm.2677 @dappershaves @robertpascale @josua.pascale @adamvancamp4650 @garyhaywood6013 @UnknownStone-b7w @nonamebear1136| @Johnny-Five @DroneShotFPV @seang8282 @lawrence1md @sharp-shaver76 @ATexanShaves @Martins-Shaves123 @subtleartsoapco @lawrence1md @sharp-shaver76 @ATexanShaves @Martins-Shaves123 @subtleartsoapco @knightmare1015 @RazorNinja-o1u @greggallant505 @seanstapelfeld2192 @lawrence1md @sharp-shaver76 @subtleartsoapco @billm.2677 @longhaultanker @dappershaves @robertpascale @josua.pascale @knightmare1015 @seang8282 @barberdave @garyhaywood6013
