Riverboats, Rivets, & Red Bricks | Across Indiana
Did you know that Indiana not only housed one of the largest shipyards in the country, but one of the oldest as well? The Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville says that during the shipyard’s heyday, roughly one out of every four steamboats in America was built right here in Indiana—making the Howards very wealthy. Wealthy enough in fact to build a twenty-two-room red brick mansion near the banks of the Ohio River, close enough to watch the Belle of Louisville take on the Belle of Cincinnati during the Great Steamboat Race before the Kentucky Derby. Follow along with producer Kevin Ratermann as he shows you how three generations of the Howard Family worked hard to build, maintain, and preserve their reputation as some of the most elegant riverboat builders in the country. @cityofjeff @GoSoIN #RiverHistory #GoSoIN #onlyINjeff #greatsteamboatrace #KentuckyDerbyFestival #IndianaHistory Watch more at www.wfyi.org/programs/across-indiana FOLLOW WFYI Instagram: / wfyi_indy TikTok: / wfyipublicmedia Facebook: / wfyipublicmedia X: / wfyi The WFYI programs you love are possible thanks to your support.
