(Aired July 3, 2026) A long line stretches so far it wraps around the corner. What are everyone after? One after another, people are grabbing bagels. The shop is filled with customers in no time! Everyone is moving around the shop with their trays in hand. There are a whopping 34 kinds of bagels lined up! From sweet options like caramel brûlée and matcha, to about 8 kinds of sandwiches with fillings like cream cheese and salmon. The dough is slowly fermented for 20 hours, resulting in a chewy texture inside. The surface is baked to a perfect golden brown, giving it a crispy finish outside. And the enjoyment doesn't stop there. At another branch of the same chain… 80% of customers order the lunch-only plate. You can choose your main dish from three options: thick-cut bacon, smoked salmon, and garlic shrimp, and also choose from three types of bagels. It comes with a salad and scrambled eggs, making it a substantial meal. You can also enjoy a meal in an extraordinary setting. Daijiro Enami (Anchor): Ms. Yamazaki, it seems like the ways to enjoy bagels are expanding. Yuki Yamazaki (Anchor): The bagels I know are almost all plain, or maybe with walnuts. There are so many bagels I've never seen before! Daijiro Enami (Anchor): They're evolving. Let's look at some more of the evolving charms of bagels. The first point is "customizing to your liking." Shops offering this kind of enjoyment are emerging. Fifteen kinds of freshly baked bagels are lined up one after another! Customers were there from early in the morning, drawn by the bagels baked fresh in-store every morning. This shop is popular not only for its individual bagels, but also for its customization options: over 20 kinds of toppings including bacon, chicken, and vegetables, 8 kinds of cream cheese, and 15 kinds of base bagels. You can enjoy your own original bagel. And what's more, they even have this kind of menu! The bagel appetizer set features four types of spreads, including tuna salad, on the top tier, and three types of toppings, including smoked salmon, on the bottom tier. And of course, you can choose four of your favorite bagels. You create your own combination. It's like a bagel afternoon tea, and Ms. Ishiwata apparently has strong opinions about bagels. Anchor Hana Ishiwata: "The most exciting thing is being able to enjoy so many combinations yourself, and it's great that you can enjoy choosing with friends, even though you'd normally have a set selection." "I think there are people who can't easily go to the store, so here's the second point that makes it enjoyable for them too. Freshly baked bagels are popular through frozen mail order." Unlike bread, bagels are boiled before baking. Boiling hardens the surface and traps moisture inside. Therefore, it's easy to recreate the chewy texture when thawed, making them suitable for freezing, which is why many stores offer mail order. And so, the store we're introducing today is "maru bagel," located in Saitama Prefecture. This bagel shop uses homemade yeast and domestic wheat, and their bagels are so popular that some varieties sell out by midday. They're packed with fillings, and even one is incredibly satisfying. Popular items include red bean paste and butter, carrot cake, and edamame, bacon, and cream cheese bagels, offering a range from sweet to savory. They also do mail order, but reservations are only accepted online for three hours, once a month. Yuki Yamazaki (Anchor): That sounds like fierce competition! Daijiro Enami (Anchor): That's what you'd think, right? They sometimes receive over 300 orders at once. While the time is limited, there's no limit to the number of reservations they accept; they fulfill all of them. The next online reservation is scheduled for a Saturday in early August, from 5 PM to 8 PM. They also offer frozen bagels. Koki Ataka (Anchor): I've only eaten a bagel once in my life, but I'd love to take a bagel-eating world tour!
