The main cause of turbo failure is over-revving. Just imagine if our M57 engine had only a small turbo, what kind of RPM would a 3.0-liter engine rev it to? Yes, it would be off-limits, unacceptable. That's what this mechanism, which I'm testing in the video, is designed for. Bypassing the small turbo at high revs also reduces airflow resistance. The large turbo operates without the boost from the small volute and turbine blades, which are only effective at low revs. For comparison, a similarly sized turbo works on engines with a displacement of up to 2 liters.
