It is located on 10.2 acres of land at the foot of the hill opposite the USTC Medical College, Pahartali, about three kilometers northeast of the city. In 1988, the then Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong M. A. Mannan and other elite people of Chittagong took the initiative to establish a zoo at Faiz Lake for the purpose of wildlife conservation, education, research and entertainment. Later, on 28 February 1989, the zoo was opened to the public. Initially, a single ticket allowed entry to the zoo and Faiz Lake, but in 1995, considering the convenience of visitors as well as additional profits, the zoo authorities arranged for entry through separate tickets at two separate gates. When the zoo was inaugurated in 1989, the ticket price was 1 taka. Later, it was increased to 2 taka, and as the number of animals and birds increased, the ticket price also increased. Currently, the price of each ticket is 70 taka. Currently, there are a total of 520 animals of 66 species here; including 30 species of mammals, 38 species of birds and 6 species of reptiles.
