How do you refer to the Holy Spirit? In the Korean church, the Holy Spirit is often expressed in these ways: "I have received the Holy Spirit." "The Holy Spirit has come upon me." "I am filled with the Holy Spirit." In these expressions, the Holy Spirit is something received, something that comes upon, and something that fills. Just like electricity. Just like water. Just like fire. However, Jesus never once referred to the Holy Spirit as "it." He always referred to Him as "He." In John 14, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit "Paracletos" (παράκλητος). And He intentionally uses the masculine pronoun ἐκεῖνος (ekenos) for the neuter Greek word πνεῦμα (pneuma). This is not a grammatical error. It is a theological declaration. The Holy Spirit is not "it." It is "He."
