Why you check your phone right after posting
You post something. And within thirty seconds, you're back on the app, checking. Nothing could have happened. It's been thirty seconds. But you check anyway. Most people will tell you it's dopamine. And they're right — but that's also the least interesting thing about what's happening. Because dopamine explains the mechanism. It doesn't explain why being seen matters so much in the first place. That answer is much older than Instagram. This video goes past the neuroscience and into something most people don't expect: a 19th-century philosopher named Hegel who argued that the self literally cannot exist without being recognised by others. Not that recognition is nice to have — that it's structurally necessary. And what that means for every post you've ever made, every like you've ever waited for, and every afternoon a quiet notification tab has ever quietly ruined. We also look at B.F. Skinner's pigeon experiments (you're the pigeon), Charles Taylor on why modern identity is uniquely fragile, and what the Stoics figured out about building a self that doesn't need the feed to confirm it exists. ───────────────────────────── Chapters ───────────────────────────── 00:00 The thirty-second check 00:45 The dopamine part (quickly) 01:45 What Hegel figured out 200 years ago 03:15 What posting is actually asking for 04:20 The cost of outsourcing your existence 05:30 The Stoic inner witness — and one question to ask before you post
