The chloride test is a laboratory screening test to check for chloride ions in the blood and urine. Chloride is an anion found outside cells that helps maintain electrolyte balance in the body. Chloride helps maintain osmotic pressure. It also helps maintain acid-base balance and digestion. Concentrations of chloride in the serum can be caused by dehydration, excessive chloride intake, kidney failure, and metabolic acidosis. Chloride concentrations can also be reduced in certain diseases. If the doctor suspects an electrolyte imbalance in the body, he or she may recommend a chloride test. Blood chloride testing or a 24-hour urine chloride test are simple screening tests. These tests are done to monitor fluid and electrolyte balance in the body and to know the effect of a low salt diet in patients. Chloride can also be detected through sweat in patients with cystic fibrosis. Why is a chloride test done? Chloride ions are essential for many important functions of the body. They are usually bound to sodium ions, so any decrease in sodium concentration can also cause chloride imbalance.
