Gallipoli is a port city overlooking the Gulf of Taranto, on the western coast of the Salento peninsula. It consists of a modern part, the Borgo or New Town, on a promontory to the east, and the Old Town, on a limestone island to the west, connected to the mainland by a masonry bridge. The island is entirely surrounded by a bastion wall that extends for about two kilometers.
