Its crest feathers stood straight up, wings spread wide, body lowered — such an intense display from such a young chick, trying hard to scare away a possible intruder. Thankfully, everything turned out fine. In Taiwan’s forests, it is often heard calling while soaring through the sky— "hoo... hoo-hoo... hoo-yoo... hoo-yoo..." It is one of the most commonly seen birds of prey in Taiwan’s low- to mid-elevation mountain forests. Its most distinctive features are the prominent crest on its head, along with the sharp, intense yellow bare skin around its eyes, giving it a powerful and commanding look. Although it is often seen soaring overhead or perched on roadside lights along highways, the Crested Serpent Eagle also quietly spends time foraging near the forest floor. More than just a top predator of the forest, it is also an important indicator of a healthy ecosystem. カンムリワシ は、ヘビをよく捕食することから「サーペントイーグル（蛇を捕らえるワシ）」とも呼ばれています。主な食べ物はヘビ、トカゲ、カタツムリ、小型哺乳類などです。森の中では、空を舞いながら 「ホッ…ホッホッ…ホーユ…ホーユ…」 と特徴的な鳴き声を響かせる姿をよく見ることができます。また、空高く旋回しながら鳴いている姿や、高速道路沿いの街灯にとまっている姿を目にすることもありますが、実はひっそりと森の地表近くで獲物を探していることも少なくありません。 カンムリワシは、森林生態系の頂点に立つ捕食者であるだけでなく、生態環境の健全さを示す重要な指標種でもあります。
