Potential AI Music LEGAL ISSUES [with Attorney, Ben McLane]
Michael is out of the office this week, but he recently recorded this interview with veteran music attorney, Ben McLane, looking at potential legal issues with music created by Artificial Intelligence. Is your music going to train a computer to create new music? Who will get paid? How will they get paid? It's the Wild West out there, and once again, tech could outpace legislation. Can you sell or license that music, even if it was created using data sets from older music? 25:36 - Michael explains that he heard about a stock music library where many of its musicians saw that they were getting paid for their music to form a data set. The company made its entire library available for this purpose. Can they do that legally? 28:01 - Michael shares a hypothetical situation if a piece of music is put together using various samples from the data set, will the original human creators get paid based on what percentage of the AI they were in? 32:06 - The legal standards and statutes for this type of music are not set yet. 36:16 - The artist Grimes has already said you can use her vocal in your own AI creation in any way you can, as long as you split any money you may make with her. 36:42 - Ben has a client making music for an Indian film that he will be singing in English, but AI could recreate it in Hindi. 37:55 - Because the legislation is behind technology, does Ben feel there will be a period of the wild west over the next 3-5 years with AI? Will it be retroactive? 40:36 - Some major labels have already sued AI companies for copying an artist. 40:58 - How will AI affect PROs? 44:19 - There will have to be a way to tag the original piece of music so the composer/ writer gets paid. 45:22 - Some music libraries do not want music that has loops, even though the composer has legally purchased the loops. Why are loops a problem? 51:38 - If using a beat, the original beat maker may have a non-exclusive deal or an exclusive one, it is important to know that before using that beat in your music. You need to be transparent about it. 54:30 - If you are going to use loops, they need to be substantially changed enough so that they are unrecognizable from the original. 58:40 - You must always read the contract very carefully! 1:01:30 - We have known AI was coming, but now it's here and cannot be ignored. ****Opinions expressed during this recording or in any edited segments of this recording of TAXI TV do not constitute legal advice.**** 🔔 Subscribe for more tips just like this: / @taxiindependentar LINKS & RESOURCES =============================== LEARN MORE About TAXI Independent A&R: www.taxi.com NETWORK with Music Industry Pros at Our FREE Yearly Convention: http://bit.ly/2a9mwlp OPPORTUNITIES in the Music Industry: http://bit.ly/28JPUyd COLLABORATE with Fellow Songwriters on the TAXI Forum: http://bit.ly/2DENChs FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA =============================== 👥 - FACEBOOK: / taxiindependentar 🐦 - TWITTER: / taximusic 📸 - IG: / taximusic We Want to Hear YOUR Thoughts, Leave Your Comments Below! #TAXIMusic #TAXITV #MusicLicensing #Music #TAXIIndependentA&R
