Ep.48. HEAVY SEAS, a rogue wave; FL to Beaufort NC.
When sailing long distance, we follow weather closely, downloading it at least once a day. When the conditions are challenging, we also use a weather router. Sometimes the forecasts change when on route, or sometimes the waves are larger than expected. We knew it would be a rough start for our trip toward Boston because a NE wind had been blowing, and wind against current in the Gulf stream is always rough. We left West Palm Florida as the winds changes to east as they started to clock towards the south. But with the wind still blowing hard, the seas were confused. We hit one rogue wave and went airborne! After storms through the night, we now had following seas, but the waves were BIG! Probably 20ft and we were surfing down waves at 20-28 kts! But then the wind died, we fell behind our predicted schedule and knew we could not stay ahead of the next storm. So we ducked into Beaufort, NC. Even under lockdown Beaufort was true to its label as "America's coolest small town", with wild horses visible on the barrier islands. Next time, after the pandemic we hope to return to Beaufort to explore the barrier islands. We will continue our way to Boston in the next episode.
