It occurs in all warm-blooded animals. One method to raise the temperature is through shivering. It produces heat because converting the chemical energy of ATP into kinetic energy causes almost all of the energy to show up as heat. Non-shivering thermogenesis occurs in brown adipose tissue (brown fat) and is regulated mainly by thyroid hormone and the sympathetic nervous system. Antioxidants - From Wikipedia Compounds that inhibit oxidation are a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals. Known dietary antioxidants are vitamins A, C, and E, but the term antioxidant has also been applied to numerous other dietary compounds that only have antioxidant properties. The vast majority of complex life on Earth requires oxygen for its metabolism, but this same oxygen is a highly reactive element that can damage living organisms. Organisms contain chemicals and enzymes that minimize this oxidative damage without interfering with the beneficial effect of oxygen. In general, antioxidant systems either prevent these reactive species from being formed or remove them, thus minimizing their damage.
