Panic strikes. When he reaches the rescue site (a creepy “Psycho”-style mansion), an eerie voice calls for help from the roof. As he proceeds with the rescue, Hozer hesitates at every turn -- but his hesitations slam him back in time! It is as if he is literally taking two steps forward and one step back. Bewildered, Hozer has visions of the other Houndz who suggest plans of action -- but Hozer always takes the “Hozer” route instead, which results in a slam-back to the time and place of his previous indecision. Until he develops the self-confidence he needs to overcome the zany situations he encounters (an Escher-style staircase, a labyrinthian Picasso room, climbing rotting rain gutters, meeting maniacal ventriloquist dummies etc.) the poor dithering Hound is in a conundrum. He has what it takes but will he find it in time or will he remain in the zone of...the twilight Houndz. Jinxed: Crystal refuses to get out of bed on Friday the 13th. The others think she is going overboard with superstition until a series of bad luck events convince all but Fontaine of the power of good luck charms. Every rescue they participate in seems to be successful only because of the increasingly cumbersome pile of good luck charms they lug around. An explosive rescue at a lightning rod factory forces the Houndz to overcome their obsession with the charms and they admit to Fontaine that she was right all along. Unbeknownst to the others, the sternest and least romantic of the Houndz had been relying on her own good luck charm all along.
