The Sugwang No. 1 variety, originally named Jeonju No. 662, was registered as a new variety in 2024 by the Rural Development Administration through the Variety Selection Deliberation Committee in 2023. Its suitable cultivation regions include Chungnam, Jeonbuk (Gochang specialty), Jeonnam, and Gyeongbuk. This variety has a heading date of August 12 and boasts excellent taste and appearance. Although it is 84 cm tall, it is resistant to lodging. In particular, it is resistant to White Leaf Blight (K3a) and is strong against Striped Leaf Blight. It has 13 sorghums but 110 grains; the 1,000-grain brown rice weight is 23.3 g, and the rice yield is 566 kg/10a. Sugwang No. 1 is a newly developed variety designed to address the issues of the existing top-tier variety, Sugwang rice, which included high shattering, a high pre-harvest sprouting rate of 49.4%, susceptibility to bacterial leaf blight, and a low yield of 549 kg. A variety that complements and improves upon the shortcomings of an existing variety, possesses 95% genetic similarity, and shares similar traits is called a derived variety; Sugwang No. 1 is a derived variety of Sugwang rice. The milling yield is 72.2%, and the milling yield of whole grains is 68.7%, which is higher than that of Sugwang. The white core is rated at 1, meaning less than 5% of the entire grain occurs; there is no white membrane. The protein content is low at 5.6%, and the amylose content is also low at 18.5%, resulting in excellent taste. The gloss value is 74.1, which is lower than Sugwang's 77.4; however, the sensory evaluation score for rice taste is 0.07, which is similar to Sugwang's 0.08. When cultivating, proper balanced fertilization is required, as excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers may lead to lodging, reduced quality, poor ripening, and increased pest and disease outbreaks. Due to its weak cold tolerance, cultivation in mid-mountain and high-altitude regions should be avoided. Furthermore, since it is resistant to striped leaf blight but lacks resistance to other viral diseases or pests, timely basic pest control is essential. Harvesting must be done at the appropriate time due to the risk of premature sprouting. We aim to provide information on the key characteristics and cultivation precautions of the Sugwang No. 1 variety, registered as a new variety in 2024, to enable safe farming practices.
