Sleepy Space | The Solar System Doesn't End at Neptune

The map in your head is wrong. The Sun, eight planets, Neptune at the edge, then nothing: that solar system does not exist. Past the last planet there is a third zone, a ring-shaped country wider than all the space that holds every planet you have ever heard of, holding hundreds of thousands of icy worlds and perhaps a trillion comets. And it is, at the very same time, one of the emptiest places humanity has ever measured. Tonight we go out past Neptune, into the solar system's attic, where the original building materials of everything, including you, have waited in cold storage for four and a half billion years. Our journey begins with a Kansas farm boy at a blink comparator in 1930, finding the first citizen of a country nobody knew existed, and with the strange irony of the belt's name: it honors a man whose famous paper argued the region should be empty. We follow two astronomers through five years of blank sky to the August night in 1992 when one faint dot finally moved, and the solar system turned out to be mostly unexplored. Then we tour the provinces: the cold classical heartland where binary worlds have been holding hands since the beginning, the plutinos stepping to Neptune's beat, and the scattered disk, the badlands of thrown worlds.
