Huge farming communities used to live up here, but today it's pretty much completely abandoned. However, someone decided to stay, choosing to keep living by the values and knowledge of the past. We get to Franco's place after heading down a little road into the woods. He lives here in an eco-friendly house he built himself, eating what he grows in his garden. A big, gentle-looking guy welcomes us. His house is surrounded by a massive chestnut grove home to deer, wild boars, and Franco's memories. "Mountain folks used to eat chestnuts all winter long," he tells us while picking the last ones of the season. In the mill he built with two ancient stone grinders, they'll be turned into flour. What fascinates us is Franco's life journey in a world that changed right before his eyes at record speed, tempting him with modern ideas, dragging him into huge social and economic issues, and eventually betraying him. Choosing to go back to the land is his way of fighting back against a system Franco just couldn't relate to anymore. Today he lives a simple, but definitely not lonely, life. Dozens of kids actually hang out at his place to meet up and learn; young people who started local farming businesses and see Franco as a great role model to keep going.
