EMPOWERING FARMERS IN KASUNGU WITH VALUE ADDITION

In Kasungu District, Malawi, JCED is tackling the root causes of rural poverty and climate vulnerability by introducing a cooking oil processing machine and value addition factory. This initiative marks a significant shift for local farmers, moving them beyond the sale of raw produce like sunflowers and soya beans. By processing these crops into high-demand cooking oil, farmers are unlocking better market access, increasing their household incomes, and creating sustainable livelihoods. “JCED is working with farmers to help them adapt and become more resilient to climate change,” explains Mr. Simplex Chingota, JCED Field Officer. “Many farmers in Malawi continue to experience prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall patterns, and destructive storms. Through value addition and climate-smart agricultural practices, we are helping communities build more resilient livelihoods.” Beyond providing machinery, JCED is educating farmers on sustainable farming methods that promote environmental stewardship. The initiative is expected to stimulate local economic development by creating employment, encouraging small-scale agro-processing enterprises, and strengthening community-based agricultural value chains. It stands as a practical example of how caring for creation and improving livelihoods go hand in hand, reflecting the Jesuit commitment to the Universal Apostolic Preference to collaborate in the care of our Common Home.
