Why Your Big Scenes Fall Flat

Have you ever written what should have been one of the biggest moments in your story...a death, a confession, a betrayal, a long-awaited reunion...only to have readers barely react? This is when scenes don't work. The reader may understand what happened and know the character is devastated or heartbroken, but they don't feel much themselves. That's one of the most frustrating things about writing. You know the emotion is there. You put it on the page, so why doesn't it land with readers? In this episode of my Diagnosing the Problem series, I'm looking at why some of our most important scenes fall flat and why the answer usually isn't "more emotion." In my experience, the problem is often that we're asking readers to feel something before we've shown them why that feeling matters. Readers don't cry simply because a character cries. They cry because they understand what that loss represents or what's changed, been threatened, or what can never be recovered. That's where emotional impact comes from.
