Batbatang Nuhu Evav (Preserving the Evav Islands – Kei Islands) – A song from Evav (Kei) Islands

“Evav” is the original name of the island region now known as the Kei Islands. This song aims to invite all generations of Evav to care about preserving the natural environment of these islands. Because it would be meaningless if the blessings of these beautiful islands were damaged due to the lack of concern from their own people, who are meant to be their guardians. “It lavur entok leran, It fadad leran entok” (when we cause damage, it doesn’t take even a day; but repairing it cannot be done in just a day). This shows that destruction happens quickly, while restoration takes a long time. “It dok fo did ohoi, It mian fo did nuhu” (we live as one with our village, we dwell as one with our island) expresses that since we live together in our environment, we also share the responsibility to protect the nature that sustains us. That is how we and our environment exist—living to sustain one another.
