New India's Big Leap | Skyroot's Vikram-1 and the Rise of Private Spaceflight
Vikram-1 is India's first privately developed orbital-class rocket, and it's now fully stacked on the launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, ready for its maiden test flight. This film follows Vikram-1's road to the pad: years of ground testing, the flight systems built in-house at Skyroot, and the reforms — backed by ISRO's infrastructure and IN-SPACe — that opened India's space sector to private industry for the first time. It's the story of a small and young team carrying India from a government-led space program into a competitive private launch industry. Building for the world from India. Test Flight-1, named Mission Aagaman ("The Arrival"), is targeting a launch window of July 12 to August 4, 2026, subject to final assembly, testing, weather, and range clearance. The flight will aim for a ~450 km low Earth orbit at 60° inclination, and its most important objective is to capture real in-flight performance data from every system on the vehicle — propulsion, stage separation, and guidance, navigation & control. That data is the foundation for a reliable, high-cadence launch program. Standing seven stories tall, Vikram-1 is a multi-stage vehicle built around an all-carbon composite structure a fraction of the weight of steel, powered by in-house solid stages and 3D-printed engines, and flown by an indigenous GNC system. It's designed to carry small satellites of up to 350 kg to low Earth orbit. Vikram-1 follows Vikram-S, which in November 2022 became the first privately built Indian rocket to reach space. Where Vikram-S proved the technology stack, Vikram-1 takes the harder step: attempting to reach orbit. Onwards and upwards. 🚀 About The Director: Vinod Mankara is an Indian film director and documentary filmmaker. A winner of multiple State Awards and a National Award for Best Documentary film.
