Described as a “passenger greeting” rally, the event was expected to continue for three days starting on Friday, August 9, 2019. Hong Kong police said they had not received an application for permission to hold the rally, and urged protesters to stay peaceful if they went ahead with what would be an illegal gathering. This is the third time the airport has been affected by extradition-bill protests, following a sit-in on July 26, and a citywide strike on August 5 that caused transport chaos leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
