"The Black Spectacles" is a classic detective novel by John Dickson Carr, first published in 1939. The story centers around a series of poisonings, and then the murder of Marcus Chesney. Chesney, wanting to prove the fallibility of witnesses, sets up an experiment where a staged scene is witnessed by several people and recorded on film. During this experiment, he is poisoned. Gideon Fell is brought in to solve the seemingly impossible crime, using his keen observation and understanding of human psychology. The story has many twists and turns, and red herrings, that keep the reader guessing until the end. In essence, "The Black Spectacles" is a complex and engaging mystery that explores themes of perception, deception, and the nature of truth.
