Anchor Recently, large-scale concerts by top Korean idol groups are being held more frequently in Japan than in Korea. As a result, voices of dissatisfaction and disappointment are emerging among domestic fans. Reporter Kim Kyung-hee examines why we cannot see these concerts as often in Korea, the home of K-pop. Reporter Last month, Tokyo, Japan, was ablaze with K-pop every weekend. From BTS to TVXQ, TWICE, and aespa, they successively took over massive concert venues throughout Tokyo. [U-Know Yunho/TVXQ: The very fact that we are performing at Nissan Stadium once again within 20 years is incredibly moving...] From mass singalongs to chants, the reaction from local fans was enthusiastic. [Hashimoto Shota/Aespa Fan: I have been coming continuously since (Aespa's) Japanese concerts began.] [I’ve seen them about 10 times.] [Chiaki / aespa·rize fan: I plan to visit Korea this year, and I want to see a performance there as well.] On the other hand, in Korea, the birthplace of K-pop, both the scale and frequency of performances are small. In the case of aespa, they performed in Korea only three times during their recently concluded world tour, whereas they took the stage 15 times in regional cities in Japan. The audience size was also more than 10 times larger in Japan. Japan has arena-class venues with around 10,000 seats in every major city across the country, and the audience base is relatively broad. [Tamura Sogo / aespa fan: I want to come to every performance from now on. I am willing to spend about 300,000 won a year.] In contrast, in Korea, venues equipped with basic infrastructure such as power supply, sound, and stage facilities are few and far between, even in the metropolitan area. Furthermore, unlike Japan, where people of all ages and genders enjoy K-pop concerts together, the audience in Korea is concentrated among those in their 20s and 30s, as well as women. [Kim Yun-ha / Music Critic: I believe the most painful point of the Korean concert market is the lack of professionally equipped venues of any size. Korea is in a state where a magnificent tiled roof is built atop roughly constructed rafters...] With the recent highlighting of the economic impact of K-pop concerts, quite a few local governments are vying to attract large-scale venues. Points are being raised that for the sustainable growth of K-pop, infrastructure for small and medium-sized performances must be established step-by-step, and institutional improvements to broaden the audience base—such as adopting a lottery-based ticketing system instead of first-come, first-served—must be implemented in parallel.
