Twenty-year-old Julio César Capote dared to leave the island of Cuba in a small boat, accompanied by his 21-year-old uncle, Chenli Yoan, and siblings Josué Gabriel and Karen Rojas Pareta, 19 and 22 years old, respectively. Paddling themselves, they attempted to cross the Florida Straits, but the adverse conditions they encountered caused the journey to take longer than expected. Dehydrated, with severe burns, and nearly unconscious, the Rojas siblings decided not to continue and jumped into the sea. The Capotes were able to continue, but a strong current broke their flimsy boat apart, and Chenli clung to a piece of foam that had come loose. He couldn't hold on for long, however, and the ocean swallowed him up. Completely distraught by the loss of his beloved uncle, Julio César still found the strength to continue the journey and drifted for almost ten days. When all seemed lost, covered in burns, starving, and desperately thirsty, a good Samaritan boat appeared and gave him water and food. This person also called the Coast Guard, who rescued the migrant a few minutes later.
