Painter Stacey McCall on painting from the domestic, a Paris residency & sketchbooks
Join Meg Dunley in this full-length conversation with Melbourne painter Stacey McCall, a full-time artist who works from a tiny studio in her backyard and shows with Boom Gallery in Geelong and Michael Reid Galleries. Stacey studied gold and silversmithing at RMIT, raised five daughters, and somewhere in between discovered that the everyday objects of home were the most meaningful subject matter she could paint. These days she is one of Australia's most distinctive still life painters, with work in Amber Creswell Bell's still life book and exhibitions in Australia and now Berlin. In this conversation, Meg and Stacey talk about: finding your authentic muse in the objects of everyday life the DIY Paris residency that changed everything about how Stacey paints the bridge painting that connects one body of work to the next how knitting and afternoon naps are actually part of the creative process what it means to finally find your thing after years of raising kids the rituals that get her into flow each morning why a good sketchbook is the best creative advice she can offer what home means for a painter whose subject matter has always been home itself Perfect for artists, painters, creatives, and anyone trying to build a sustainable creative practice around a full life.
