Étienne Klein directs the Laboratory for Research on the Sciences of Matter while also pursuing an active career in popularizing science on the questions raised by contemporary physics, particularly quantum physics and particle physics. Étienne Klein was a member of the Scientific Council of the Parliamentary Office for Scientific and Technological Assessment (OPECST) from 2013 to 2016. From 2007 to 2013, he was a member of the Council for Social Analysis, chaired by Luc Ferry. In 2013, he was elected a member of the French Academy of Technologies. In 2016, with sociologist Gérald Bronner, he conducted a study on risk perception for this institution. He is also a member of the steering committee of the Diderot Institute. Since January 2010, he has been a member of the Scientific Council of Universcience. With Marc Lachièze-Rey and Roland Lehoucq, he designed the permanent exhibition "The Grand Narrative of the Universe" for this institution, and co-edited the accompanying publication. From September to December 2014, at the request of the Minister of National Education, Benoît Hamon, he chaired the jury of the National Conference on School Assessment. The report of this conference was submitted on February 13, 2015, to Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, who had succeeded Benoît Hamon. From 2010 to 2018, Étienne Klein chaired the jury for the Diderot Prizes, awarded annually by the AMCSTI. From September 2012 to March 2014, he hosted a weekly radio program on France Culture, "The World According to Étienne Klein," every Thursday morning. Since September 2014, he has hosted the program "La Conversation scientifique" (The Scientific Conversation) on the same channel, broadcast weekly on Saturdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in 2014-2015 and then from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., also on Saturdays, since 2015. Étienne Klein was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (IHEST) on September 29, 2016.
