BMW Built a Car That Was Too Fast to Exist

This is the story of the BMW M3 GTR — the most iconic car from Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Everyone remembers chasing it. Everyone remembers trying to get it back. But in real life… this car was something completely different. Built to dominate the American Le Mans Series, the M3 GTR broke BMW’s own traditions by using a V8 engine — and it worked. The car went on to win 7 out of 10 races in 2001, taking over a championship dominated by Porsche. But success came with a price. Controversy, rule changes, and pressure from rival teams led to one of the most infamous moments in motorsport history — effectively banning the car that was too good. BMW tried to fight back by creating road versions… but it wasn’t enough. They lost the car. They lost the championship. But a few years later… they gained something much bigger. This is the story of how a race car became a legend.
