Tilling the soil isn't always beneficial; if done too frequently or invasively, it reduces organic matter and consequently reduces microbial activity. This leads to a decrease in biological fertility. Physical fertility can also be compromised due to a deterioration in soil structure. Some tillage techniques also cause the formation of a hard bottom. However, never tilling the soil at all, especially in a new planting, can also have negative effects. These include increased use of herbicides, soil compaction, root asphyxiation where machinery passes, shallow root systems, and increased sensitivity to water stress. In the first two to three years after planting a new vineyard, these last aspects are crucial for the proper development of the new plants.
