Vaca Muerta has once again become the focus of Argentine job expectations. Amidst declining industrial employment in various provinces, the loss of formal jobs, and economic hardship, Neuquén appears to many workers as a land of opportunity. However, this perspective often oversimplifies a much more complex reality. On the program "Energy Challenge," Exequiel Sánchez Salas, from the consulting firm Sánchez Salas, and Silvia Stiep, a representative of the Potenciar Foundation, analyzed the job market linked to Vaca Muerta following the testimony of the mayor of Añelo, Fernando Banderet, who had warned about the constant influx of people to the region seeking employment. Sánchez Salas was direct in pointing out that the expectations surrounding Vaca Muerta do not always correspond to the actual possibilities of entering the industry. "The expectations that have been generated are so high that what we are experiencing is a communication breakdown, especially from national media," he stated. As he explained, Vaca Muerta has gone from being an occasional topic on the national public agenda to becoming a permanent fixture, associated with record production, record fracking, and promises of growth. But this message, he warned, often omits important nuances. “The message it’s sending us is: jobs will be created, but not all of them will be high-paying, and not all of them will be permanent,” he stated. In particular, he highlighted the difference between stable operational jobs and construction-related jobs, which have a shorter cycle. “Construction projects start and finish. And then people stay on,” he maintained.
