Grand Seiko, Zenith, And a $53,000 Bracelet
The 2025 Zenith G.F.J Chronometer asks whether a bracelet can cost more than its watch. It can if said bracelet is solid platinum, model exclusive, and destined to be discontinued. From a $49,900 limited edition watch to over $100,000 when fully strapped, the Zenith 160th Anniversary flagship piece boasts an F.P. Journe-level chainmail accessory with a Journe-level price to match. See it on Watches Tonight with Tim Mosso. 2025 is the 160th year of watchmaking at Zenith's Le Locle factory, and a limited edition commemorative model - or models - felt inevitable. But the charming 39mm Zenith G.F.J Chronometer was a true surprise. Named after the founder of the brand, this lapis lazuli-dialed and platinum cased manual winder proves Zenith can excel beyond chronographs. Case, crown, and movement are bespoke to the model, and the caliber 135 returns from its 1960s grave with more power reserve at 72 hours, new hacking seconds, and COSC Swiss chronometer certification for good measure. "Masonry" motifs on the movement recall the historic facade of Zenith's factory buildings. But wait, because there's more: this $49,900 watch can be ordered with a $52,700 platinum bracelet. While 160 examples of the watch will be made, the astounding premium for this model-specific bracelet ensures that examples thusly equipped will be collectibles in a class by themselves. The "masonry" theme of the GFJ Chronometer's dial continues on the bracelet indicating that no other model or edition will wear this unique and uniquely expensive band. Once the shock has worn off, it becomes apparent that the full-bracelet GFJ is precisely the kind of watch that will appear on a Christie's catalog cover in 30 years. For the right kind of long-term collector, the $102,600 version of the Zenith G.F.J. Chronometer represents a rare opportunity to own a legend in its own time.
